Cheyenne Ward '20 wants what most Flyers want, "I want to be able to make changes that impact people," she said.

That is exactly what Paul '50 and Aleen Schreiber did when they established the Paul and Aleen M. Schreiber Scholarship at the University of Dayton through a bequest and the balance of their annuity.

"One of the happiest phone calls I've ever made was to let my family know I'd received the Paul and Aleen Schreiber Scholarship to help pay tuition," Cheyenne said.

Both Paul and Aleen taught for decades in the Dayton area. Aleen taught modern languages at the University of Dayton before settling in at Centerville High School and teaching Spanish and Latin from the 1950s through the 70s. Paul briefly taught math and science alongside Aleen in Centerville, as well as at Sinclair Community College and the Air Force Institute of Technology - in addition to establishing a prominent career as a research physicist.

The couple enjoyed their retirement and continued to educate others in a volunteer capacity. Paul helped AARP members file their taxes, while Aleen taught English to international students and helped them adjust to life in the United States. Both recently passed away, but they ensured their lifelong devotion to education would carry on through students like Cheyenne.

Cheyenne is motivated; she works 20 hours a week at a professional internship while taking 18 credit hours of classes. On top of that, she is the arts and entertainment editor for Flyer News and volunteers with Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley.

She's able to achieve it all due to the thoughtful actions of Paul and Aleen, who made the smart decision to invest in an annuity with the University of Dayton. This guaranteed the Schreibers an income for life and provided support for future Flyers just like Cheyenne.

"If I could, I would tell them thank you so much," said Cheyenne. "Their gift makes me try to live up to their example: to live a more kind and generous life."

The University of Dayton mission to become the University for the Common Good begins with this special kind of devotion, one that extends far beyond any of our lifetimes. The Schreibers - and so many others - inspire us with their lasting dedication to - and investment in - future generations of Flyer students.
