What are the benefits of making a bequest in your will or trust?

  1. You will leave a lasting legacy that will be remembered.
  2. It costs you nothing now, and you retain control of your assets throughout your lifetime.
  3. You may lessen taxes you pay in your estate.

Here are some of the ways to leave a bequest to the University of Dayton:

How a gift in your will/trust works:

A gift in your will or trust is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to family, friends or University of Dayton as part of your estate plan, or you can make a bequest using a beneficiary designation form.

A bequest may be made in several ways

  • Residual (percentage) bequest - make a gift from the balance or residue of your will or trust.
  • Specific bequest - make a gift of a specific dollar amount or a specific asset in your will or trust.
  • Real estate bequest - You may be able to make a gift of a piece of real estate to UD in your will or trust. However, these gifts can be more complex than other types of gifts, so please contact us so that we can assess whether UD will be able to appropriately use the gift.
