Barbara Eckler '80

When Barbara Eckler ’80 and her husband, Bo Cheatham, sat down to revisit their estate plans they realized their loved ones were well taken care of, so they decided to name their alma maters as the beneficiaries of their IRAs. “It was an easy decision for us to help others get their education,” said Eckler.

She earned her bachelor’s in education from the University of Dayton, continuing on to earn her master’s from Colorado State University. “I met the most amazing women in my time at UD,” she said. “I still get together with my roommates from Marycrest. They taught me how to get along and treat others with respect. They assisted me in realizing my goal of helping others.”

Eckler retired from a 29-year career in healthcare as an exercise physiologist. Her husband attended University of Northern Colorado and spent the majority of his career as a flight paramedic. With their bequest, they honor her former roommate, who was forced to withdraw from UD due to insurmountable financial circumstances. Their scholarship will provide emergency assistance for students who need it to remain enrolled.

“This generous gift will help students focus on their education, reducing the stress that too often comes from worrying about affording things like housing, books, supplies or food,” said Jason Reinoehl, vice president of strategic enrollment management.

For Eckler, it’s about providing opportunity. “This scholarship celebrates all the women of UD who had an impact on me…I am a better person for having met them.”
